Plugging In
This page is intended for those who are new to mastering sin. Once you have read Mastering Sin, we encourage you to engage in the
following tips ASAP. Applying these suggestions will enhance your reign over the sin at your door.
Be persistent
Matthew 7:7–8 (NIV) says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For
everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” Your job is to be
persistent in doing the asking, seeking and knocking. It’s up to God to make sure we receive, find, and keep opening the way.
Pray, pray, pray
If you want to master sin, begin by pursuing God through prayer. You can’t go wrong by thanking God for placing a desire in your
heart to serve Him and asking Him to direct your paths.
Focus on truth
Another important step is eliminating the avenues you want to avoid. So What’s the Difference by Fritz Ridenour provides a concise
explanation of numerous religions that either ignore or deviate from the Christian truths handed down to us by Christ and His
apostles. Once you’ve armed yourself with this knowledge, you’ll be in a better position to take the next step.
Network with others
One of the best ways to achieve victory over sin is to surround ourselves with people who live in the truth our salvation is a gift from
God through His Son Jesus Christ. Building this type of support network takes time, effort, and church involvement.
As the direction God seems to be leading you in starts to sharpen, make sure the church you are plugging into proclaims the
following:
•
salvation through God’s Son Jesus Christ alone
•
the transforming impact of God’s Holy Spirit in our lives
•
the Bible as the authoritative word of God.
Attend events
Unfortunately, entering an unfamiliar church for the first time can be a major challenge in itself. If trying out churches seems like too
big of a step, attend Christian concerts or other functions that are directed at the public. This type of environment is generally more
relaxed and a great way to meet people. It will also give you a perspective on the church that may not be visible in their worship
services. Local Christian radio is an excellent source for finding out what events are being held in your area.
Make sure to try a variety of events. God will use each dead end and open door to validate the direction He is leading you in.
If you want to make a great first impression, look for a way to help out. Clearing a few plates from a table after a meal or picking up
some trash will likely grab the attention of people you want to start connecting with.
