About Us

Who We Are

Janice and I married in 1978.  Both natives of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, we’ve made the U.P.’s Ottawa National Forest our home since 1980.  We embrace the constant change the four seasons grant us.  A bald eagle soaring overhead or an unexpected black bear in the yard are attractions we also hold dear. A favorite summer activity is packing our eight grandchildren into the sauna (swimsuits on) and then jumping into the cool water at the family lake property.  When our long and often frigid winters melt into spring, the fun of turning maple sap into syrup is another woodland activity that sweetens our lives.

An Unexpected Challenge

When Janice and I married, we were convinced God had brought us together for a purpose.  We had no idea His purpose would include writing a book. In the year 2003, I was spending countless hours whining to God about some of the biblical truths I felt are being passed over today.  God responded to my prayers with this simple challenge: either do something or stop whining.  I sensed God was suggesting I write a book, but I had zero writing experience.  God put an end to my whining by making it clear that writing is a skill I could learn. When I mentioned to Janice I was thinking of writing a book, she thought it was a great idea.  So, I started writing and she ensured an environment that supported our new venture.

Our Writing Journey

Once I generated a few chapters, I asked my daughter Janelle Franz for some help.  Janelle had just graduated from college with honors in writing.  After reading my first attempt, she gently affirmed the fact I knew nothing about writing and began setting me straight. Then life got busy for Janelle and me.  Starting a day care and growing a family filled her days and spare moments became few for me as well.  As the manuscript gathered dust year after year, I lived with the weight of avoiding the project I knew God wanted me to finish.  In the fall of 2014 it was obvious my winter work load as a carpenter was going to freeze to a halt.  I told Janice I was considering completing the book.  Once again, she encouraged me to go for it.  Day after day she kept our house quiet so I could concentrate.  Progress was painfully slow.  Winter ended and no end was in sight. When the spring of 2015 arrived, my carpentry business started to flow once again.  I decided to get up at 4:30 AM each morning and write for a few hours before heading off to drive nails. Janice and I also surrendered numerous weekends to keep the project moving. At some point in this time frame I approached Jan Staley for help.  Jan has her Masters Degree in Reading.  Together, we shaped, and reshape each chapter.  In the fall of 2015 I knew I was in for another sawdust free winter.  By now the end was starting to emerge.  Jan encouraged me with each critique my work.  Two friends, Randy and Nancy Schauwecker, also provided a helpful insight to the manuscript.  On a sunny morning in February of 2016, I was able to smile at my wife and tell her I had just finished the last chapter.  It was evident a ton of editing would need to occur, but there was virtually nothing left to create.  In September Kathy Ide began the brutal task of editing the manuscript.  In January of 2017, we enlisted the services of Creative Enterprises Studio to help us finalize and promote the project God and I began back in 2003.

Moving Forward

Now Janice and I are engaged in helping God place Mastering Sin into the hands of those He had us create it for.  We hope that person is you.
